Control Over Culture
An Organizational Commentary
by M.Anthony Sacco
Anaïs Nin (1903 – 1977) was an essayist and memoirist born and raised in France though her parents were not French but were Cuban. She spent some time in Spain and Cuba, but lived most of her life in the United States. She became an established author. She wrote broadly in the form of journals, novels, critical studies, essays, short stories, and erotica. A lot of what she wrote, like Delta of Venus and Little Birds, was published after her death.
Here’s a quote of hers that I’d like to share:
From the back-stabbing co-worker to the meddling sister-in-law, you are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life.
By practicing self-awareness, we all can discover our “happiness index” or, what we could say is our level of positive influence on those around us who we interact with, by work, family, friendship, community or circumstance, and therefore are connected to our lives. Once we are aware the next step is to intentionally eliminate the negativity and focus on the good, being a positive force and an example of how we can be happy with the blessings we have.
